Today's Thought: Never reduce God to a Bible verse. Scripture is important, but it's not big enough to contain God.

Are We Preaching the Wrong Gospel?

Apr 9, 2026

A Question Most Christians Never Ask

What if the gospel most of us grew up hearing isn’t the same gospel Jesus preached? That’s not a very comfortable question, is it? It’s an important one, though. Because if we’re serious about following Jesus, we should care deeply about this:

What did Jesus actually preach?

Not what tradition says.
Not what church culture emphasizes.
But what He actually taught.

When you look at the Gospels closely, something becomes clear... Jesus didn’t spend His ministry preaching "how to go to heaven." He preached something else, something we've been missing that should be at the very heart of Christianity!

What Did Jesus Preach?

If you search the Gospels for Jesus' central message, you’ll find a consistent and unambiguous theme:

"Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand."

Not:

  • "Repent, so you can go to heaven one day."
  • "Repent, so you won't go to hell."

But:

  • “Repent, for the Kingdom of God is almost here.”

The phrase "Kingdom of God" (elsewhere "Kingdom of Heaven") appears over and over again in the Gospels. The obvious question is:

What is the gospel of the Kingdom?

At its core, the gospel of the Kingdom is the good news (gospel) concerning:

  • God’s rule is a reality now.
  • Heaven is not just a destination, but a present reality we can tap into now.
  • The resources of the Kingdom are available for you now.

This isn’t just about where you go when you die. It’s about how you live while you’re here.

Gospel of Salvation vs Gospel of the Kingdom

Now let’s be clear—salvation matters. But somewhere along the way, the message of salvation shifted.

The Gospel Many of Us Heard:

  • Accept Jesus so you can go to heaven.
  • Focus on sin, forgiveness, and the afterlife.
  • Faith becomes primarily about escaping this life.

The Gospel Jesus Actually Preached:

  • The Kingdom is present and active.
  • Transformation is available now.
  • Faith is about participation, not just belief.

The difference is massive. One creates waiting Christians. The other produces engaged Kingdom citizens.

Why This Shift Matters More Than You Think

This isn’t just a theological nuance. It shapes how people live.

When the gospel becomes only about heaven:

  • People endure life instead of transforming it.
  • Faith becomes passive instead of active.
  • Prayer becomes begging instead of partnering.

But when you understand the Kingdom:

  • You begin to see differently.
  • You engage God differently.
  • You live with purpose, authority, and expectation.

In other words:

👉 You stop trying to get to God.
👉 You start living from what He’s already made available.

Why So Many Christians Feel Like Something Is Missing

Let’s be honest. A lot of believers feel like:

  • There should be more
  • Something isn’t clicking
  • Faith feels incomplete

That’s not a failure of their faith. It's a signal. In fact, their connection to God is so strong, their spirit is screaming that there's more!

Many have been fed explanations (and even those are often lacking), but not experiences... concepts, but not engagement. And when this gap isn’t addressed, people either settle for religion, burn out, or walk away.

The Kingdom Changes Everything

When you shift from a "heaven later" mindset to a "Kingdom now" mindset, everything changes.

  • Prayer becomes alignment, not desperation.
  • Faith stops being completely blind, and becomes based in spiritual sight.
  • Life becomes participation, full of possibilities, not just survival.

You begin to realize:

So… Are We Preaching the Wrong Gospel?

Not entirely. But many of us have been preaching a woefully incomplete gospel. A gospel that starts with salvation, but never moves into transformation (beyond the superficial). It's a gospel that lifts up a "character" called "Jesus," but completely ignores His actual message.

If we stop at salvation, we miss the invitation. Jesus didn’t just come to get you into heaven. He came to bring heaven into you... and through you to the world!

Where Do You Go From Here?

If this resonates with you, don’t ignore it. That tension you feel? That curiosity? That’s the beginning of something wonderful.

Because understanding the Kingdom isn’t just about information. It’s about learning how to live differently. And most people were never trained for that.

Final Thought

You don’t need a different Savior.

You may just need a deeper understanding of the gospel He preached.
